Lexy's Mother's Day Interview Covered in SCRATCH Magazine
Lexy answers some fascinating questions for SCRATCH Magazine in celebration of Mother's Day, check it out and discover how she landed her position at LEHQ and what it's like to work with such a legend of the nail industry and ultimate boss lady, Lezlie McConnell (also known to Lexy as, "Mom").
How did it occur that you both started working together? What work do you both continue to do?
Lexy shares, "I grew up in the business! Lezlie owned a salon called Lexy’s Salon for 10 years. I came to work with her quite a lot and bugged all the clients and gossiped with the all employees in the back room. Once LE was started—I was 8—I found myself putting labels on jars and helping out in the warehouse.
I guess you could say the beauty industry picked me at this point! Beauty was all I knew and all I was surrounded by. Once I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to continue to work in the industry. Luckily, I knew some people ;) Jim and Lezlie offered me a job, and I’m now the Creative Director here at Light Elegance. Dream job? Check!I love fashion, color, nails, being creative and working with my family every day. My husband even works here, too! It’s a dream."
How do you navigate your relationship while working together? Do you have to set particular boundaries? If so, what are these?
My mom is the all-time greatest boss. She holds a very high bar and expects greatness, which can be challenging at times but is extremely rewarding. At work, I’m not her daughter, I'm her employee. She expects me to do my job and do my job well. I couldn’t even step foot into the LE building unless I had a college degree and worked internships during the summer for experience.
I thank her everyday now that she didn’t give me a free pass. She knew one day I would run the company and she wanted me to have all the tools I needed and all the respect from my team because I earned it. Lezlie is kind and compassionate but she is also extremely strong, determined and doesn’t take a lot of sh*t. The perfect balance for a boss… and a mom. She is my ultimate mentor and if I can be half the woman she is one day, I count myself lucky.
What are the benefits & challenges of working together?
The benefits are I get to be around her all the time, learn from her and soak in all her brilliance. I get to be a passenger in how she operates a global business and it’s truly the greatness gift she has ever given me. The challenges are trying not to call her “mom” at work (haha). Even though she is this multi-talented bad-a**, she is still just my mom at the end of the day and she will always be my mom first.

Can you share any funny/interesting stories of working with one another?
This is a great one! She tells this story so good in person. When I was 10 or 11, I overheard her and my dad in the kitchen talking about firing someone soon. The next day, I walked into work with her and decided I was going to help her out. I walked right up to the nail-technician that was getting the boot and said, “My mom’s going to fire you today,” and walked away. Let’s just say the rest of the day didn’t end up so great. Luckily, we both laugh about this story now, and usually a couple of margaritas are involved!
At Light Elegance, we know that strength, creativity, and passion start at home—because our brand was founded by a mother who believed in building something beautiful.
This Mother’s Day, we honor the moms who inspire, nurture, and create. Whether you're a mom, celebrating a mom, or remembering one, today is all about love and appreciation. Happy Mother's Day from LEHQ to you!
